Minneapolis Order of Protection Attorney
What is an order of protection?
An order of protection, or order for protection (O.F.P.), or harassment restraining order (H.R.O.) is a court order prohibiting a person from committing acts of domestic abuse or harassing behavior against another person and/or their minor children. A protective order is issued by the court to protect a person from bodily harm that is either feared or actual. It restricts another person from attempting, threatening or acting in such a way as to injure another family member or a child.
Depending upon the particular circumstances of your case, the court has the discretion to order a wide variety of restrictions upon the person subject to the protective order. The court may:
- Refrain the person from committing acts of domestic abuse against the alleged victim
- Exclude the person from entering the house of the alleged victim
- Exclude the person from entering the place of employment of the alleged victim
- Award temporary child custody and child support to the alleged victim
- Require anger management and/or chemical dependency treatment
- Refrain the person from all direct (phone calls, email, text messages, letters) and indirect (through a third party) communication with the alleged victim
- Other restrictions as the court deems appropriate
